Lady Tiger golfers finish in 13th place tie

POTTSBORO, Texas – The East Central University women’s golf team settled for a 13th place tie as the two-day, two-round Texoma Chevy Dealers Lion Intercollegiate Tournament wrapped up Tuesday at the par-72 Tanglewood Resort Course.

ECU’s best finish came from freshman Shay Shaw, who had the team’s best round of the tournament with a 10-over-par 82 on Tuesday after shooting an 89 on Monday. She finished in a tie for 47th place. She was among seven golfers who had four birdies in the event. Only the individual champion – Rebecka Surtevall, of Arkansas Tech, had more with five.

Two other Lady Tigers – Ashley Cardwell and Emily Wharton – tied for 62nd place. Cardwell finished play with an 86 on Tuesday after recording a 90 on Monday, while Wharton cooled off with a 92 on Tuesday after firing an 84 in Monday’s opening round.

Also for ECU, Lindsey Lunceford tied for 68th place after rounds of 88 and 89, while teammate Sara Posey was 106th overall. Posey fared much better in the second round with a 94 after registering a 103 on Monday.

Surtevall shot a 78 on Tuesday after firing a 1-over 73 in Monday’s first round as she finished at 7-over for the tournament and won it by three shots over second-place Hammerli Sriyai, of West Texas A&M, and Jacqueline Lau, of Tarleton State. Sriyai had rounds of 78-76 and Lau posted a 74-80.

Tarleton State claimed the team championship with a score of 631, followed by West Texas A&M (636), Central Oklahoma (644), Arkansas Tech (649), Newman (655), Arkansas-Fort Smith (655), Oklahoma Christian (657), host Texas A&M-Commerce (668), Cameron (670) and Harding (674).

Tyler Junior College finished 11th with a 680, followed by Southwest Minnesota State (691), ECU (700), Park (700), Southwestern Oklahoma State (608), Winona State (709), Rogers State (710), Texas A&M-Kingsville (714), St. Mary’s (726) and Ouachita Baptist (775).

There were 113 golfers competing in the tournament.
