Cheer and Dance to Host Tryouts for 2014-15 Season

2013-14 Cheer and Dance Teams perform at a home football game.
ADA – The East Central University Cheerleading and Dance programs will be hosting tryouts for the 2014-15 season Sunday, May 4.  Registration for cheer starts at 7:45 a.m. and registration for dance begins at 4:30 p.m. at Kerr Activities Center.

There is a $30 tryout fee paid in cash or make checks payable to: ECU Cheer Foundation.

The tryouts are open to both current ECU students that will be enrolled full time for the 2014-15 school year and incoming freshman that have officially been accepted to ECU.  Current students will need to bring a copy of their transcript and grades from this semester signed by their professors and a recommendation letter from a coach or teacher.  Incoming freshman must bring their official ECU acceptance letter.

All potential cheer and dance team members must also have the following:Anyone trying out that is under 18 must have the waivers and forms signed by a parent or guardian.

All tryout participants are highly encouraged to wear form fitting attire, proper dance shoes (jazz shoes), performance hair and makeup.  All body art must be covered.

Dress code for cheer tryouts is black shorts or yoga pants and a blank tank top for females.  Males tryout need to wear black shorts and a white shirt.  All shirts must be plain, with nor print or writing.

Tryout requirements for Cheer are:
  • Creation and execution of your own cheer, which must include motions and a jump.
  • You will be required to perform a roundoff and another gymnastic skill
  • You will be required to do one stunt with a partner(s).
Judging for cheer will be based on crowd involvement, enthusiasm, appearance and technical skills of motions.  Gymnastic and stunt skills will be judged on safety and technical execution.

Dress code for dance tryouts is black shorts or yoga pants, blank tank top and dance shoes.

Tryout requirements for Dance are:
  • Creation and executions of your own dance, lasting no longer than one minute.
  • You will be required to perform several technical skills: Double and triple pirouettes, fouettes, switch leaps, center leaps, toe touches and a skill of your choice to showcase flexibility (ex: leg extension, walkover)
Dance will be judged on technical execution, extension, control, body placement, musical interpretation, motion placement, precision, sharpness and energy.  You will also be judged on your appearance (poise, posture and physical fitness) and an interview during the final round.  The interview will be judged on personality, ability to communicate and attitude.

Music for dance tryouts must be on an Ipod/MP3 player or cell phone and must be an edited "radio" version of the song.

The tryouts are closed to the public.  Parents, family members, friends or significant others may not participate by watching.
